The sacral chakra, associated with the colour orange is located just above the sacrum, 2-3 inches below the navel and governs our reproductive organs. When opened and fully functioning, it heightens our sexual desires and love for the opposite sex and enables us to give and receive pleasure in sexual relationships. When expressed with mutual love and respect, it draws our human forms closer together satisfying both our primordial instinct to mate and our yearning for spiritual communion.
The sacral chakra develops during the toddler stage and continues through to puberty and is why it is associated with the inner child (free, playful and creative) and sexuality. It is considered the water element because it allows us to go with the flow of life.
The toddler and young child are drawn between vivid fantasy worlds and consensus reality, and must gradually let go of the fantasy world. Young children who perceive things that adults cannot are quickly taught that their imaginary friends do not exist.
The first task is to master object constancy, which is the ability to hold a stable image in the mind for example mum, even when she is not there. This helps the child to feel safe. This ability is also what helps to create an external world that begins to endure long enough for consensus reality to take shape.

As we expand from the root to the sacral chakra we gain access to a higher vibrational level called the lower emotional body or lower astral body (pictured right). This is the layer of inner feelings and personal emotions. This aura or subtle body of rainbow colours appear as clouds of coloured lights that extend between 1″ to 3″ from the physical body. This lower emotional layer is only temporary for those who evolve to higher states of consciousness.
